No need for drastic changes: Bumrah ahead of RCB clash
ABU DHABI, Oct 27: Mumbai Indians pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah on Tuesday said there is nothing that the bowlers have to change drastically following the hammering they received at the hands of Rajasthan Royals in the previous game.
MI were at the receiving end of RR’s Ben Stokes and Sanju Samson who chased a stiff 196-run target with ease.
“We are still very happy, we are still very clear and we have nothing that we have to change drastically, it is just that on one day the opposition played better than you, you have to just say well played and move forward,” Bumrah said.
“We have got good bowlers this year. Trent Boult, James Pattinson, even (Nathan) Coulter-Nile, so it is always been very good to bowl with them, we discuss a lot of things,” said Bumrah on the eve of the game against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Bumrah said he takes into consideration factors like boundary sizes, wicket before bowling a Super Over and then chooses his options.
Asked about the difference in bowling a final over in chase and a Super Over, Bumrah, said, “It is difficult to just categorise at one go, but it is different.
“It depends on different people how they treat it, but for me I just try to keep things simple, try to assess the wicket, situation, the boundary sizes and all of that and then choose my options.
“It’s very difficult to just say oh you should bowl yorkers, you should just bowl slower ones, you have to be very proactive, smart with what approach you want to have and what the wicket is helping as well, so all of these things I keep in mind…” added Bumrah, who has 17 wickets from 11 matches this season.
He also admitted that it was little-bit difficult to always stay in the bio-bubble and hence being mentally fresh was important.
“Stay in the present, try to control things that you can, and try to create an atmosphere inside the bubble, try to talk to a lot of people, try to have conversation back home as well.
“These things help in staying inside the bubble and I look to do as well. The times are tough but you have to adjust as professional cricketers. Everybody’s safety is top priority,” he signed off. (PTI)
De Villiers set to miss Big Bash due to COVID and family issues
DUBAI, Oct 27: The versatile AB de Villiers has decided to skip the Big Bash League (BBL) this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the upcoming birth of his third child but is open to return in future due to “unfinished business” at Brisbane Heat.
The two factors prompted the former South African skipper to pull out of the T20 league. The 36-year-old is currently playing in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the UAE.
“We are expecting our latest child very soon and with a young, growing family, and the uncertainty around travel and conditions due to COVID-19, we reluctantly decided it wasn’t going to be this season,” de Villiers said in a statement.
“The Heat were great to us last season and I am very open to returning to the club in future. The team didn’t get the results we were hoping for and I consider there is some unfinished business to deal with.”
De Villiers signed a contract with the BBL franchise last season and scored 146 runs at an average of 24.33.
The seasoned campaigner has been in fine form in the ongoing IPL, having amassed 324 runs at an average of 54.
Brisbane Heats head coach said the team was keen to have de Villiers’ service in the upcoming season.
The Big Bash League is scheduled to start on December 3 with a clash between Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Renegades. (PTI)
Mandeep’s mental toughness has rubbed off on the entire team: KL Rahul
SHARJAH, Oct 27: Mandeep Singh scored a match-winning 66 two days after losing his father, and Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul feels the mental toughness shown by the opener has rubbed off on the entire squad.
Mandeep made an unbeaten 66 against Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday night to help KXIP record five wins in a row.
The opening batsman, playing in the absence of injured Mayank Agarwal, lost his father last week and attended his funeral via a video call.
“It’s so hard when you are away from your family. With the bubble, you don’t have the close ones. The kind of toughness he (Mandeep) has shown has rubbed off on other boys as well.
“The way he played today, it makes everyone emotional. He’s gone through a rough time, just to put his hand up, be there and finish the game for the team would make him proud and make his father proud,” Rahul said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
With wrist-spinners Murugan Ashwin and Ravi Bishnoi bowling well in tandem, Rahul said the credit for that goes to head coach Anil Kumble.
“When you have Anil Kumble as the coach, it’s not surprising that we are playing with two leg-spinners. It’s something that he had in his mind even before the IPL started.
“He always kept telling me that towards the second half or at some point that two leg-spinners is always an aggressive option,” he said.
KXIP have won all their games since Chris Gayle returned to the side after sitting out in the first half of the tournament.
“It was a very hard decision not to play him (Chris) because he was batting really well. This is the hungriest I have ever seen him in the last 7-8 years that I have played with him. He is running his ones and twos, so that’s refreshing.
“He’s always positive, always pushing the youngsters. It’s great to have someone with that much experience,” said the skipper.
KKR captain Eoin Morgan rued the lack of partnerships during their innings, save the one between him and Shubman Gill.
“Disappointed with the partnerships, thought we could have scored more (runs). When we were three down, we wanted a partnership going,” Morgan said.
“Around 180-190 would have been a good score, but we kept losing wickets. That’s one of the challenges this year, going from ground to ground,” he added. (PTI)

RKFC chairperson apprises Rijiju of sporting activities being carried out in valley
NEW DELHI, Oct 27: From downtown Srinagar to the sensitive Pulwama, Bandipora or Sopore, football fever has gripped the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, thanks to a plethora of activities being carried out by the trailblazing Real Kashmir FC.
RKFC chairperson Sandeep Chattoo on Tuesday met Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and apprised him of the work being done by the club towards promotion of football in the valley as well as the issues facing it at the moment.
Impressed by RKFC’s commitment to the game, Rijiju assured the club full cooperation.
“The central government is committed to support football as well as all sports in Jammu and Kashmir,” Rijiju told PTI.
“I will visit Kashmir soon to review all the sports projects,” added the sports minister.
Chattoo was also optimistic after the meeting that lasted about half an hour.
“I apprised the minister of the things we are doing for the sport, we spoke about how football has caught the fancy of people in Kashmir. Not just football but other sports activities are also being held regularly,” Chattoo said.
“Be it the downtown or Kupwara, Sopore, Pulwama, Bandipora Shopian or Anantnag, it is being played everywhere and it is such a wonderful feeling seeing them play,” added Chattoo, the man behind the incredible transformation.
The role of local administration is also very important to the growth of sports in the valley and the more they are involved, the better it is for football and all other games.
Teams from most of these places go up against the reserve squad of Real Kashmir Football Club.
In a matter of only four years, RKFC has set benchmarks that many others are trying to follow.
From securing promotion to I-League to finishing third in its maiden season, to setting up an all-women’s team — which will compete at national tournaments — RKFC has achieved praiseworthy feats in a very short time and against heavy odds.
They have four men’s teams at the moment. Kids as young as 4 to 10-year-olds are being trained by RKFC.
“We have the main men’s team, a reserve team, one U-18 and one U-13 outfit. Besides, we now also have an U-17 and U-14 women’s team.
“Adidas continues its partnership with us and we have also added the Delhi Public School as part of our #shepower campaign,” Chattoo said.
In September, Real Kashmir Football Club had announced the formation of an all-women’s team.
Chattoo believes that “girls have tremendous sporting potential and can go miles if trained properly”.
During his meeting with Rijiju, the RKFC chairperson also discussed with him the issue of granting visa to the club’s foreign players and support staff, including head coach David Robertson and his two assistants, for the upcoming I-League that is scheduled to be held in Kolkata from December. Rohit unlikely as Mumbai and RCB aim to secure play-off berth
ABU DHABI, Oct 27: Rohit Sharma is likely to miss his third game in a row when Mumbai Indians face Royal Challengers Bangalore here on Wednesday with both teams aiming to secure their spot in the IPL play-offs.
While Mumbai are sitting on top of the table despite their eight-wicket hammering by Rajasthan Royals with 14 points, Virat Kohli-led RCB too remain on 14 following their loss to Chennai Super Kings on Sunday.
A win for either side on Wednesday should be enough to take it to the play-offs.
Rohit’s fitness has become a subject of unwanted attention ahead of the game. Having missed the last two games due to a hamstring injury, Mumbai Indians skipper returned to the nets on Monday, a day when he was not named in the India squad for the Australia series.
There is still no conclusive update on his fitness from either Mumbai Indians or the BCCI.
In Rohit’s absence, Mumbai would persist with both Saurabh Tiwary and Ishan Kishan, who has played some scintillating knocks.
Quinton De Kock (374 runs) had a rare failure against Rajasthan and he would be keen to make an impact. Kishan (298 runs) and Suryakumar Yadav (283 runs) are among the leading run-scores who can go on the offensive against any attack.
The six-hitting prowess of Hardik Pandya (224 runs) was on display in the RR game, when he plundered seven maximums.
Along with stand-in captain Kieron Pollard (214 runs) and Krunal Pandya (85 runs), he can take any attack to cleansers and their hard-hitting ability could prove to be the difference between the two sides.
Mumbai bowlers would be more than keen to forget the hammering they received from Rajasthan’s Ben Stokes and Sanju Samson.
Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah have been lethal both at front and at the death, accounting for 33 wickets amongst themselves. For the third pacer spot, MI could choose between James Pattinson and Nathan Coulter Nile.
For RCB, Kohli (415 runs) would like to continue his splendid run in the tournament. Australian Aaron Finch (236 runs), young Devdutt Padikkal (343 runs) and AB de Villiers (324 runs) need to be more consistent and support their skipper.
De Villiers has shown time and again, why he is regarded as one of the best T20 batsmen by turning the clock back on few occasions. If the RCB top-order fires in unison, then they can pummel the MI attack into submission.
The likes of Chris Morris, Moeen Ali and Gurkeerat Mann, who form the lower-middle order, can also chip in with useful cameos.
But for the southern team there is injury scare on the bowling front with pacer Navdeep Saini suffering a split webbing. There is no clarity on his participation for the game against Mumbai.
In case he misses, Chris Morris and Mohammad Siraj would need to shoulder greater responsibility along with Isuru Udana.
Teams (From): Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma, Aditya Tare, Anmolpreet Singh, Anukul Roy, Chris Lynn, Dhawal Kulkarni, Digvijay Deshmukh, Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, James Pattison, Jasprit Bumrah, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Mitchell McClenaghan, Mohsin Khan, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Prince Balwant Rai, Quinton De Kock, Rahul Chahar, Saurabh Tiwary, Sherfane Rutherford, Suryakumar Yadav, Trent Boult.
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Aaron Finch, Devdutt Padikkal, Parthiv Patel, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Gurkeerat Singh, Shivam Dube, Chris Morris, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Navdeep Saini, Dale Steyn, Yuzvendra Chahal, Adam Zampa, Isuru Udana, Moeen Ali, Josh Philippe, Pawan Negi, Pavan Deshpande, Mohammad Siraj, Umesh Yadav.
Match starts at 7.30 PM IST. (PTI)
