Over 200 militants in Kashmir valley: GOC

Srinagar, Jan 28: Army today said that over 200 militants are active in Kashmir valley but security forces are maintaining pressure on them to ensure peaceful conduct of various functions in the Valley.
While speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function at the inauguration of Nawjawan Club for Youth at High Ground Anantnag in South Kashmir today, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Army’s 15 Corps, Lt General Satish Kumar Dua, today said that there are over 200 militants operating in Kashmir valley. “There are around 220 militants, over 200 militants in Kashmir”, he said.
The GOC said that Army, other security forces and intelligence agencies work together to dominate the area to ensure the peaceful conduct of events and functions like Republic day.
“Whenever there is any major event or function like there was 26th January, security forces dominate the entire area. The intelligence agencies and security forces work together and ensure peaceful conduct of these functions”, General Dua said.
The GOC said that the counter-infiltration grid along 400 kilometer long Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir is robust and in multi tiers to foil any infiltration attempt. “The infiltration grid along the LoC is robust and it is in multi tiers”, he said.
It may be mentioned here that counter-infiltration grid along the LoC has been intensified over the years and according to the Multi Agency Centre (MAC) figures, the infiltration figures of 2015 are 35. These 35 militants, mostly belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) managed to infiltrate into Kashmir valley in 2015, mainly through Kupwara sector of LoC during summers. According to the MAC figures 65 militants infiltrated into Kashmir in 2014, 97 infiltrated in 2013, 121 in 2012, 52  in 2011, 82  in 2010, 99 infiltrated in 2009 and 27 infiltrated in 2008.
In the meantime, Police today averted weapon snatching and cop killing in South Kashmir’s Shopian district when they arrested a militant during an operation.
SSP Shopian, Altaf Khan, said that security forces achieved a major success today when they arrested a Hizbul Mujahideen militant Farooq Ahmad Hurra during an operation from Ringwar Kellar area of Shopian district.
The SSP said that he was planning to carry out weapon snatching  and cop killing  and security forces had inputs about it for last one week. He said that Farooq  Ahmad Hurra son of Ghulam Ahmed Hurra of Nazninpura, Shopian was recruited by HM commanders Farooq Ahmed Sheikh and Wasim Malla alias Rizwan.
Khan said that on the specific intelligence input, a joint operation was launched by Shopian Police and Army’s 44 RR in Ringwar village of Shopian district. He said that Farooq was apprehended with Chinese pistol.
