Over 2.63 lakh applications for old age pension pending with SWD

DB directs for verification, disbursal of benefit

JAMMU, May 9: As over 2.63 lakh applications are pending for grant of old age pension, the Division Bench of State High Court comprising Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Sindhu Sharma has directed the Social Welfare Department to verify the same and disburse benefit to the genuine persons.
After going through the report filed by the Social Welfare Department in a Public Interest Litigation filed by Viklang Chattra Trust, DB observed, “263620 applications are pending with the Department of Social Welfare at different levels for grant of pension under the Old Age Pension Scheme”.
“The department should conduct verification of all the applications and the applicants, whose claims are found to be genuine, be disbursed the benefit as per the schemes”, the DB directed after hearing Advocate Summit Nayyar for the PIL whereas Senior AAG HA Siddqui with Deputy AG Vishal Bharti for the State.
In the report, it has also been mentioned that scrutiny of the record of applicants is required to weed out bogus claims and also ensure payment to the beneficiaries through banking channels.
