JAMMU, Jan 16: As a part of “Road Safety Week” the Institute of Management and Public Administration (IMPA) and Traffic Police Department organised open house discussion on “Traffic Management in Jammu and Kashmir” at IMPA Conference Hall this evening.
Minister for Transport Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan was the chief guest on the occasion.
Chairman IMPA, Dr. Ashok Bhan, Inspector General of Police Traffic Muneer Ahmed Khan, Transport Commissioner, Sourab Bhagat, DIG Traffic, Shafqat Wattali, senior citizens, members of civil society and members of IMPA besides officers of Traffic Police, Transport, MVD Departments were present on the occasion.
During the session, several issues on road safety measures were discussed and suggestion given by the participants on smooth regulation of traffic on the roads of the State. The participant stakeholders also discussed the issues including plying of big buses, encroachment on footpaths, overloading, musical horns, use of flash light, wearing of seat belts, ban on using mobile phones and fitness certificates and gave their valuable suggestions for smooth regulation of traffic especially in the capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar besides the major towns of the State.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that Government has initiated several measures for ensuring smooth regulation of traffic in the State, adding that in this regard the concerned departments have been already directed to adhere to the traffic rules and regulation strictly to avoid accidents on the roads. He also sought the cooperation of the transporters and driver unions in making journey on the state roads safe.
He said that due care is being taken to enforce transparency in the issuances of driving licences, fitness and other relevant certificates and making provision for adequate services on all the routes of the State. He said that the department is making all out efforts to make safe and ensure that fit vehicles driven by well-trained drivers ply on the roads.
