Oil tankers’ drivers & cleaners demand amendment in oil carriage tenders

Excelsior Correspondent
JAMMU, July 2: All J&K Oil Tankers and Truck Drivers & Cleaners’ Union have urged the Petroleum Ministry and the Petroleum Public Sector Undertakings including Indian Oil and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited to include necessary clauses related to welfare of the drivers and cleaners in their upcoming Petroleum and LPG carriage tenders.
Today, in a meeting the office bearers of the Union asked the heads of these public sector units to include the legal clause in tender document to ensure that the tankers and trucks owners provide at least fixed minimum wages to drivers and cleaners as the owners exploit the drivers and cleaners and in many a cases just pay them Rs 4000 to Rs 5000 per month.
Harasis Singh a senior functionary of the Union informed that president of their Union, Ranjit Singh Raina had earlier also took up this issue with the representatives of the State Government and oil companies but despite assurance nothing was done on ground.
He said as now the new tender for carriage of petroleum products in different parts of the State is about to be issued by HPCL and IOCL very soon, therefore the necessary clauses should be included in terms and conditions of the tenders.
They also alleged that Valley based dealers of LPG have spoiled the transport industry of Jammu as these valley based agency owners buy 4 to 5 trucks and the actual transporters associated with this trade suffer.
