JAMMU, Sept 4: The judicial custody of Lashkar militant Mohammad Naved Yakub, who was arrested alive in Udhampur attack, was today extended by another 14 days.
“Naved was produced before the special NIA Court this morning after 14 days,” sources here said.
They said, “Court has extended the judicial custody of Naved for more two weeks and he has been sent to the Central Jail, Kot Bhalwal.”
Earlier, Naved was produced before the Judge for confessional statement.
Meanwhile, driver Showkat Ahmad who was arrested from Pulwama, Srinagar for transporting Naved and his accomplice, was also produced in the NIA court.
Two BSF personnel were martyred, a militant was killed and one arrested alive during an attack on BSF convoy on August 5 near Samroli in Udhampur district.
Special Judge NIA YP Kotwal after perusal of the CD files said during custodial interrogation of accused Naved, certain facts regarding the larger conspiracy behind the terrorist attack have come to light, which includes the network of conspirators, supporters, financers, facilitators and handlers of the accused under custody, who need to be verified during the course of investigation.
The court further observed that investigation of the case is scattered across various places of J&K and other co-accused are absconding and have not been apprehended till date which causing hindrance in unearthing the larger conspiracy behind the attack.
With these observations, the Court extended the 14 days judicial remand of Mohammad Naved with the direction to NIA to lodge the accused in Kot-Bhalwal Jail and produce the accused before the Court on expiry of the remand period. He also directed to get the accused medically examined after every 48 hours.
In an another application filed by Chief Investigating Officer NIA seeking direction to disposed of the live grenade which was recovered from the Naved, Kotwal permitted the NIA and directed the SSP Udhampur to get the live grenade defused under standard operating procedure by an expert in the presence of Magistrate.
