It was a red letter day in the scientific history of India when on 24th September the MOM was successfully positioned in the Martian orbit. India became the first country in Asia to be successful in such a mission and the first country on the globe to do so in its maiden attempt. In Asia the countries like Japan and China have already failed in these missions.Our Prime Minister while congratulating the ISRO scientists has rightly said that the Indian scientists are in the habit of achieving the impossible. One of the most encouraging factor is that all the components and Pay Loads are designed and manufactured by the Indian scientists in India only which have worked precisely as per the expectations of the scientists at ISRO. During its long journey of about 680 million Km it has positioned its antenna constantly towards the earth for communication and its solar panels towards the sun to generate power.All through its journey the MOM has controlled its temperature and also responded the commands loaded by the scientists at ISRO 10 days ago. Hence it has proved the excellency of the Indian technology and the brilliance of Indian scientists.
The red planet has remained a subject of interest for the world since the beginning of the space exploration as it is believed that if there was any life in the universe other than the planet earth it could be on the Mars. Hence in the recent years a number of countries are eyeing the red planet with the idea of establishing permanent human settlement there. NASA’s Curiosity Mission which landed on the red planet in August 2012 established that the conditions there were once suitable for existence of life and also declared that there was no presence of methane which is a vital chemical for life processes. But the former chief of ISRO U.R.Rao did not agree with the theory of nonexistence of methane. Now after its placement in the Martian orbit the pay loads on the spacecraft have started their working. The information collected by the MOM shall give an idea about what happened to the water which believed to have been once present there in abundance. It will also investigate the presence of methane and water on the planet.We hope we will get useful information from the MOM to ascertain important facts about the red planet and whether the dream of settlings humans on a planet other than earth can be true.
