UDHAMPUR, May 2: Up convoy toward Srinagar was halted for two hours as locals protested on the National Highway demanding removal of traffic police check post at Manthal near Tikri in Udhampur.
The protesters alleged that hundreds of trucks remain stranded on the highway as they are stopped by traffic cops due to restrictions of vehicular movement. The drivers and conductors of these halted trucks use foul language and carry out defecation and urination in the adjoining fields thereby totally polluting the area, they explained.
Surjeet Singh, Sarpanch of Mand, who was leading the protest, alleged that he had taken up the matter with the senior traffic officials but no action has been taken.
The agitators were pacified by DSP HQ Gourav Mahajan and SHO Rehamble, who reached the spot and assured the removal of traffic post at the earliest.
