LoC trade suspended due to floods

SRINAGAR, Sept 18: The overnight rains and flash floods have washed a portion of Srinagar-Muzaffarbad road today forcing the authorities to suspend the trans-Line of Control (LoC) trade for one week.
The rains washed away a portion of road near Red Bridge in Uri forcing the authorities to suspend the trade for one week. The traders were keen that the road link should be restored as around 30 trucks of bananas were in the Salamabad waiting for cross over to Muzzafarbad today.
The Custodian of trans-LoC trade, Nazir Ahmad Baba, met the Assistant Executive of Broder Roads Orgainations (BRO), B L Shaw, to discuss the problem traders were facing due to closure of the highway.
Shaw informed Baba that it will take at least a week for the BRO to restore the road link. The traders in order to save the bananas from rotting moved the trucks to Srinagar Fruit Mandi for selling it in the local market.
Srinagar-Muzaffarbad road was also blocked at Lagama due to landslides. But the BRO pressed its men and machinery into service and cleared the road by this afternoon.
The landslides triggered due to heavy rains in Uri have closed the local roads in the area causing lot of in-conviance to the people. The Garkote road that connects several villages is worst hit as the slides have blocked the road at several places.
