Srinagar, May 26: Residents of Khrew in South Kashmir’s district of Pulwama today protested against the cement factories for producing highly poisonous dust in the area.
Locals, civil society members and Auqaf Islamia Khrew participated in the two day long protest and demanded that the pollution control norms be followed.
More than 10 schools participated in the protest rallies. The students were chanting slogans against cement factories for producing toxic dust which has affected badly their lives. They were holding placards reading “stop pollution”.
Chairman Civil Society, Adil Bhat, told Excelsior that they want Government to take strict action against the factories for not taking preventive measures to stop pollution. “Our land has become barren and saffron cultivation is down,” he said.
Bhat said that these cement factories should follow the industrial act guidelines which allow them to spend 2 percent for the welfare of the people of area.
“We are asking them to create green zone in the area which will be beneficial for welfare of the people and children”, he said.
“Majority of the locals are showing symptoms of chest diseases, air has become polluted, we feel worse every breath we take”, he added. He demanded that administration should interfere into this matter.
