Kashmir highway through despite rain, Ladakh remains cut off

SRINAGAR : The national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through despite rain while Ladakh region remained cut off due to accumulation of heavy snowfall since December last year.
The historic Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region also remained closed. Besides dozens of far-flung and remote areas, including those near the Line of Control (LoC), remained closed.
A traffic police official said that the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was through for both way traffic despite rain.
It was raining at different areas on the highway, including Qazigund, Jawahar tunnel, Banihal, Ramban and Ramsu, he said, adding that the highway was still through.
However, he said from tomorrow, only one-way traffic will be allowed following repair of the road. The highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir remained closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway have already pressed into service sophisticated snow cutters and other machines besides men to put through the highway early this morning.
The snow clearance operation was going on a war footing and the highway would reopen about a month early if there is no fresh snowfall, a BRO official said. (UNI)
