Kashmir highway through despite rain, fresh snow at Sadhna, Razdan tops

SRINAGAR: Despite rain, the national highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was through for two-way light and one-way heavy vehicle traffic while Sadhna and Razdan passes remained closed as there was fresh snowfall during the past 24 hours.
The national highway linking Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic Mughal road, remained closed since last month due to accumulation of snow and slippery road conditions.
Two-way Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) traffic continued on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway while Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) traffic will only ply from Srinagar to Jammu on Thursday, a traffic police official told UNI.
However, he said Jammu-bound LMV traffic will have to cross Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, between 0700 hrs to 1400 hrs while vehicles from Jammu have to cross Nagrota between 0600 hrs to 1000 hrs.
Similarly, Jammu HMVs have to cross Qazigund by 0700 hrs and Jawahar Tunnel by 1230 hrs and no vehicle, including security force convoy, would be allowed from opposite direction, he said. However, no vehicle will be allowed from Jammu or Srinagar after deadline, he said.
Meanwhile, dozens of villages, including those near the LoC, remained cut off from their respective district and tehsil headquarters for the past three days due to heavy snowfall.
There was fresh snowfall during the past 24 hours in the upper reaches in the north Kashmir while plains have light to moderate rain since early this morning.
The road between Bandipora to border town of Gurez and other villages near LoC remained closed due to accumulation of about three feet of snow.
The road is slippery and there was fresh snowfall early this morning, an official of Police Control Room (PCR), Bandipora said over phone.
He said there is very less chance of reopening of the road in near future because of several feet of snow accumulated at Razdan pass.

The road is slippery and there was several feet of snow accumulated, he said, adding that to avoid any accident, all roads have been closed as a precautionary measure, an official of PCR, Kupwara said.
There was also avalanche warning for next 24 hrs in the higher reaches in north Kashmir. Eleven people were killed after a snow avalanche hit Sadhna top in the first week of January. However, he said, there was light rain in the Kupwara town early this morning. (AGENCIES)
