Meanwhile, while warning of strict measures in case the violations of the COVID SOPs continue in Srinagar, the district administration today said that Srinagar could trigger the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in J&K.
Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar Aijaz Asad said that 60% of COVID cases in J&K are being reported from district Srinagar while he named several city areas that have witnessed an uptick in the COVID positive cases.
“I am telling you as a Magistrate that if J&K witnesses the third wave, it will be all because of Srinagar. Therefore we need to exercise precaution,” he said during his visit to city centre Lal Chowk.
He also said that several areas in the city are witnessing a rise in positive cases. “If you see the positivity rate of COVID cases for past some time, in Srinagar, the rate has been higher. 60% of cases reported from J&K belong to district Srinagar. From the last one week, Lal Bazar has reported 20 positive cases, Bemina 17 and Chanapora 18 which is not a good trend at all,” he said.
He said that if the cases in the area that have been mentioned continue to be reported at the same pace , then the administration will be left with no option “but to take strict measures because the public behaviour is the major factor,” he said.
He said that due to the open and gross violation of the COVID SOPs, people are inviting the third wave of the pandemic.
“If we have been able to stay safe so far, is all because of caution that people have exercised. But we are now inviting the third wave with the violation of the COVID protocol,” he said.
The DC said that people need to follow the COVID Appropriate Behaviour in letter and spirit particularly during social and other types of gatherings.
“There is a need for strict adherence to CAB in buses. Social functions also need to adhere to CAB. While the administration is doing everything possible to prevent things from going south, at the same time, people also need to follow the SOPs. We have to prevent the third wave,” he said.
He added that in the areas that have been mentioned and recorded an increase in the positive cases, there has been a repeated violation of the COVID protocols
Aijaz said that for the last few days, there have been gross violations of the CAB by people across district Srinagar and that there is a need for individuals to act responsibly.
“It is not possible for a Magistrate or even any Police Officer to maintain vigil and ask people round the clock to wear masks. We have to be accountable on an individual basis. People have been following COVID SOPs earlier, but from the last few days, there have been gross violations of the CAB by people.
Earlier, keeping in view an increase in the COVID positive case, the administration has already notified 8 Micro Containment Zones in areas such as Batamaloo, Zadibal, S.R Gunj and Khanyar to prevent further spread of infection.
