JAMMU, May 20: The residents held protest against the anti-encroachment drive carried out by Jammu Development Authority (JDA), here today.

Despite strong resistance by the residents, JDA retrieved 387 kanals of prime land at village Chak Sardar Attar Singh in Tehsil Mandal of District Jammu.
As per official spokesman, on the directions of Vikas Sharma, Vice Chairman, JDA, today a six hour long drive was carried out and 387 kanals of prime JDA land was retrieved at Village Chak Sardar Attar Singh, Tehsil Mandal, Jammu by the Khilafwarzi and Revenue Wings of JDA.
The drive was carried out under the supervision of Sanjay Gupta, Director Land Management, JDA, spokesman said, adding that the drive was headed by Shruti Bhardwaj, Tehsildar JDA Zone-B and assisted by Ramesh Kumar Bakshi, Tehsildar, Mandal and Arjun Singh Naib Tehsildar, JDA, while Fida Hussain, Naib Tehsildar, Mandal remained present on spot as Duty Magistrate. Besides these Khilafwarzi wing headed by Inspector Ramesh Kumar JDA also remained present during the drive.
During the drive boundary pillars were marked and JDA sign boards were also erected over demarcated JDA Land.
Despite intense public resistance, the drive was successfully concluded with full co-operation extended by Vinay Sharma, SP South and Dr Sunniya Ashkoor Wani SDPO South, Jammu.
During the drive, some of the residents also fainted and some were taken into preventive custody, police sources said, adding that ‘our job was to assist the JDA in their anti-encroachment drive, which they carried out today.
Police also cane charged the protesting residents during which some received minor injuries.
While talking to media persons, a lady sarpanch of the area said that today’s drive is totally against the people living in this area. “These people are living here in this area since five decades. Why no drive was conducted in the past”, she said and appealed to the Government to look into the matter.
Sukhnandan Choudhary, Ex-MLA also reached the spot and while talking to the media persons strongly condemned the anti-encroachment drive carried out by JDA along with police contingent.
He asked the Government to regularize this area at par with Nanak Nagar.
