JAMMU, May 21: Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens (AWSC) Jammu today stressed upon the Government of J&K to initiate some special steps towards facilitating better living for senior citizens.
In a meeting of the Association’s life members held today through ‘Zoom App’, the general secretary of the Association, Virender Kumar Gupta apprised the members that Government of India recently issued an advisory for senior citizens during COVID-19, providing for a number of Do’s & Don’ts.
President of the Association, JS Sudan said that during this difficult time of Corona pandemic, the senior citizens are the worst affected as a class in many aspects. “In view of this, as also, as mandated by virtue of ‘The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen Act, 2007’, as amended by ‘The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, there was dire need of having initiated some special steps towards facilitating better living for this class, in particular,” he added.
However, he regretted that this major class seems to have been left to suffer. “Not to speak of special steps, even few instructions concerning senior citizens issued earlier, including home delivery of essential commodities as also home banking facility and protection of lonely single or couples (senior citizens) are not available at present,” Sudan pointed out.
Sudan urged the authorities to initiate some urgent necessary steps in this direction, which would provide at least some comfort, during these hard times, to the senior citizens in particular, besides taking adequate required measures to ensure implementation of ‘The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizen Act, 2007’ in its right perspective.
