JAMMU, Dec 18: Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS), Jammu, has criticized the authorities for taking up the criminal cases registered in 2008 in Amarnath agitation against the activists. The Samiti termed this move of the authorities politically motivated and demanded the Government to implement the agreement reached between it and the Government in letter and spirit.
The meeting of the Samiti, which was held here today, alleged that the criminal cases are being taken up by police authorities at the behest of political leadership of the ruling coalition in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the State.
The criminal cases registered at the time of agitation are being taken up after a span of about five years with the sole motive to harass the prominent people of agitation, said Pawan Kohli, convener of the Samiti, who presided over the meeting.
“Clause No 4 of the Agreement specifically mentions that the criminal cases will be reviewed on the merit of each case by a committee headed by Principal Secretary (Home), Anil Goswami, within 60 days and till the completion of the process, no action would be taken in such cases”, Kohli said, adding as the ceiling of 60 days has already expired on October 31, 2008, therefore no action is warranted against any of the agitator.
He further said that the action now being taken in certain cases violates the spirit of the Agreement and needs to be stopped forthwith.
Kohli warned the Government of another agitation if all issues of the Samiti are not addressed in letter and spirit according to the Agreement.
