Hundreds of posts for 42 new BPPs

The Home Department of the Jammu and Kashmir Government has approved the creation of 607 new positions to enhance the Anti-Infiltration Grid (Tier-II) in the region. These positions include 39 Sub-inspectors, 50 Assistant Sub Inspectors, 88 Head Constables and 430 Selection Grade Constables (SGCT)/Constables to be stationed at 42 new Border Police Posts (BPPs) across Jammu and Kashmir. These Border Police Posts serve as the second line of defence behind the Border Security Force (BSF) and Army on the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC), respectively, to curb infiltration by militants, drone movements, drug smuggling and other undesirable activities. The Border Police Posts are established in various districts of the Jammu region, including Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, and Poonch, as well as Baramulla and Kupwara districts in the Kashmir valley. Many of the 42 Border Police Posts have already been established, while others are still under construction based on the border’s topography to block militants’ and drug smugglers’ infiltration routes.
Border Police Posts (BPPs) play a crucial role in strengthening the security apparatus and combating smuggling and terrorism in border areas. The BPPs are established at strategic locations, based on the border’s topography, to block the infiltration routes used by militants, smugglers, and other anti-social elements. The BPPs are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure, including surveillance equipment, communication systems, and other essential resources, to monitor the border areas and respond to any infiltration attempts quickly. The personnel deployed at the BPPs are trained and skilled in handling various situations, such as the infiltration of militants, the movement of drones, drug smuggling, and other undesirable activities. The BPPs act as a force multiplier, supplementing the efforts of the BSF and Army by providing additional intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities to the security forces.
The recruitment of locals from border areas into the belt forces has several advantages. Firstly, the locals are familiar with the terrain, culture, and language of the region, which makes them more effective in dealing with the challenges in the border areas. They are better suited to understand the local dynamics, identify the infiltrators, and communicate with the local population, thereby enhancing the operational efficiency of the security forces. Secondly, the recruitment of locals from border areas into the belt forces provides employment opportunities to the youth in the region. It helps address the issue of unemployment, which is a significant problem in these areas. The employment of local youth also creates a sense of belonging and loyalty towards the country, which helps enhance national security. Thirdly, the recruitment of locals helps build trust and confidence between the security forces and the local population. The locals, who serve in the security forces, act as a bridge between the security forces and the local population. They can provide valuable insights and feedback to the security forces based on the realities and sentiments of the local population.
Most importantly, recruiting locals into any belt force is an effective way to strengthen intelligence gathering and analysis in the border areas. The recruitment of locals provides several advantages that can help improve the quality of intelligence. This is especially important given the prevalent situation in border districts. Activation of terrorism again in certain districts is a matter of great concern.
BPPs help in curbing the infiltration of militants and smugglers, detecting illegal activities, and preventing any untoward incidents that can threaten the peace and stability of the region. In summary, the recruitment of locals from border areas into the police, army, and BSF provides operational efficiency, employment opportunities, and builds trust and confidence between the security forces and the local population. This single step of administration goes a long way towards protecting the interests of the region and nation.
