Govt wakes up, posts DIG Jammu

JAMMU, June 4:  As protests rocked Satwari areas, the Government today asked DIG Traffic Jammu Ashkoor Wani to officiate as DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua range, a post which was lying vacant since May 31 after the retirement of IPS officer Shakeel Beig.
The adhoc approach by the State Government in the Police Department can be well gauged from the fact that sensitive post of the DIG Jammu, which should have been filled up well before retirement of Beig, was lying vacant even after four days after the officer relinquished the charge.
“The post might have remained vacant for days together but today’s violence incidents in Satwari area prompted the Government to give additional charge of the post of DIG Jammu-Samba-Kathua to Ashkoor Wani,” sources said.
Wani took over the charge tonight itself in addition to his post as the DIG Traffic Jammu.
He visited violent hit areas after taking over and inter-acted with the people.
It was not only the post of the DIG Jammu but even the post of SP (City) South under whose jurisdiction Satwari police station falls was also lying vacant for past over one and a half month after the transfer of IPS officer Rahul Malik.
SP Operations (Jammu) Udhay Bhaskar Billa was holding additional charge of the SP City South Jammu.
