Govt rubbing salt on farmers’ wounds: Charak

Excelsior Correspondent

JAMMU, June 8:  Strongly criticizing Coalition Government for issuing cheques worth Rs  37 and Rs 94 to the farmers for the damage caused to their crops in Jammu areas, former Minister  and senior Congress leader Gulchain Singh Charak today alleged that PDP-BJP Govt was rubbing salt to the farmers’ wounds.
In a meeting of the Congress workers held at Pasgal in Bishnah constituency  today, Mr Charak expressed concern over the plight of the poor farmers.  He said paying such a meager amount as compensation is cruel joke with the farmers who have suffered immense loss due to floods and hail-storm. He described Modi-Mufti Govt as insensitive towards the issues of  farmers and border people.
Mr Charak alleged that farmers are at the verge of starvation and non-serious attitude of the Government to reach out to them has added to their woes despite their concerted efforts to apprise the Government about their un-ending miseries. The concerned political representatives and the Government officials have not come out with any corrective measure to their rescue.  It is an act of insensitivity and cruelty by issuing cheques for Rs 37 up to Rs 200 in some areas as relief to the sufferers, he added.
The Congress leader appealed the people of Jammu province to be aware of the nefarious designs of the various agencies trying to vitiate the peaceful atmosphere of  the region. He warned the State and the Central Governments to stop this worst type of discrimination being meted out to this region and don’t try to put people to test. He further demanded that the Government should make immediate necessary arrangements to make the secretariat functional separately at Jammu.
The speakers urged upon the Government to take immediate necessary steps to solve their problems or be ready to face the consequences. They further said that there is worst condition of roads, lanes, drains electricity, drinking water and irrigation water in the area as if there exists, no Government, in this region.
The meeting was organized Darshan Lal,  Haqiqat Singh and  Suraj Parkash, senior leaders of the area.  Prominent amongst those who were present and spoke included Gambhir Dev Singh, Dr Raghubir Singh (Sarpanch), Madan Bhagat, Capt. Gurbach Saini, Puran Singh (Chairman) Prem Saini, Mehar Singh, Balwan Singh, Yash Paul, Bachan Singh, Yog Raj and others.
