Radio Diagnosis, Obst & Gynae Deptts worst hit
*Only 30 pc Super Specialists, 70 pc faculty in place

JAMMU, Apr 1: Government Medical College and Associated Hospitals (GMC&AHs) Jammu have been facing acute shortage of faculty members as well as gazetted and non-gazetted staff including paramedics, nurses, technicians and Class IV staff.
Official sources told Excelsior that GMC&AHs Jammu which cater to the whole population of Jammu region have been working with only 70% faculty while 30 percent of the sanctioned posts are lying vacant. They said what is more surprising is that these 70 % faculty members have been managing 1100 beds in GMC Jammu against the notified bed capacity of 900.
Giving more details, they said there are only 233 faculty members in GMC Jammu against the sanctioned strength of 369 and the worst hit departments are Medicine (13 posts vacant), Anesthesiology (6 posts vacant), Obst & Gynae (27 posts vacant), Microbiology (10 posts vacant), Orthopedics (3 posts vacant), Paediatrics (10 posts vacant), Pathology (9 posts vacant), Radio Diagnosis (15 posts vacant) and Surgery (8 posts vacant).
“Against the sanctioned strength of 59 Super Specialists, only 19 are in position with shortage of 40. There is only one Super Specialist in position against the sanctioned strength of 4 in Surgical Gastroenterology, only 1 against the sanctioned strength of 4 in Plastic Surgery and surprisingly there is no Super Specialists in Surgical Oncology, Nephrology, Clinical Hematology & Medical Gastroenterology against the sanctioned strength of 4 in each Speciality,” sources said, adding, there is only one doctor in Endocrinology and Medical Oncology against the sanctioned strength of 4 in each speciality.
Sources further disclosed that there is also shortage of 203 non-gazetted Superior Non-Plan and NPS staff against the sanctioned strength of 512 in GMC Jammu. He said there are only 22 gazetted staff presently working in GMC against the sanctioned strength of 42 while there is shortage of 15 non gazetted (Ministerial Staff) against the sanctioned strength of 35.
“Further, there are 136 posts of Nursing Staff lying vacant against the sanctioned strength of 532, 73 posts of paramedics lying vacant against sanctioned strength of 220 and there is also shortage of 147 Class IV employees against the sanctioned strength of 596 posts,” they said.
The situation of non-gazetted staff in Associated Hospitals is also worrisome, sources said, adding, in the Chest Diseases Hospital, there are only 72 non-gazetted staff in position against the sanctioned strength of 133 and 87 Class IV employees against the sanctioned strength of 151.
“Similar is the case with SMGS Hospital where there is shortage of 86 paramedics against the sanctioned strength of 168, 96 Nursing staff against the sanctioned strength of 374, 165 Class IV employees against the sanctioned strength of 334 and 31 Ministerial staff against the sanctioned strength of 54,” sources rued.
They further revealed that in Super Specialty Hospital Jammu, against sanctioned strength of 487 posts of non-gazetted staff including technicians, staff nurses and office staff, only 329 are in place while there is shortage of 158 non-gazetted staff.
Disclosure regarding the shortage of faculty members, gazetted officers, paramedics and other non-gazetted officers were also made today by Balvinder Singh, an RTI activist of Jammu, while addressing a press conference.
