SRINAGAR, June 4: Two-day International Geographic Union (IGU) Commission Conference on “Geo-hazards, Biodiversity, Resource Sustainability and Mountain Response to Global Change” was today inaugurated at Gandhi Bhawan, University of Kashmir.
Speaking at the function, Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir Prof A M Shah highlighted the importance of themes to be discussed during the conference. “This conference is of great significance to us all as it would help to improve understanding of our climate, temperatures and seasons”, he said. He asked students and scholars to take advantage of the presence of over 250 experts from diverse disciplines belonging to various reputed institutions representing, Poland, Hungary, Germany, Japan, Tajikistan, Romania and Cameron and from different parts of the country.
Prof Talat Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi who was chief guest at the function said that experts at the event would appreciate that Kashmir provides a perfect setting and ambience to discuss issues on the theme of the conference.
Prof Yukio Himiyama, Vice President IGU, while speaking at the event discussed about increasing vulnerabilities to natural hazards and stressed that proper mitigation of strategies should be adopted in order to lessen impacts of disasters.
Earlier while welcoming guests and delegates, Prof T A Kanth, Convener of the conference, stressed that the conference was aimed at providing an ideal platform for geographers, geomorphologists and environmentalists to assemble and deliberate on socially relevant themes.
Prof. M. Sultan Bhat, the Organizing Secretary, IGU, gave a brief outline on the various topics of discussion and technical sessions during the conference.
Prof. Ishtiaq A Mayer, Head, Department of Geography delivered the vote of thanks while Dr. Shamim A. Shah, senior Assistant Professor of the Department, conducted the proceedings of the function. The abstract of the conference was also released on the occasion.
