Education can improve health status: Dr Sushil

Jammu, Apr 22: Deliberating upon the important yet least emphasised determinant in determining the health outcomes in one’s life,   Dr. Sushil Sharma during a day-long health awareness camp in the precincts of Dogra Brahaman Pratinidhi Sabha, Jammu underscored the importance of education in improving health status of individuals, families, communities, states and nation.
“Education provides people the ability to know how to take care of themselves. Numerous studies across the globe documented that higher levels of education are positively associated with better health throughout the lifespan.  He stressed that in addition to being prepared for better jobs and high income, people with more education are more likely to learn about healthy behaviours. Educated patients may be more able to understand their health need, follow instructions, advocate for themselves and their families, and communicate effectively with health providers,” Dr Sharma, HoD Cardiology, GMC Jammu, said.
Accompanied by  team of  young doctors and  paramedics   Dr Sushil examined people of adjoining areas for prevalence of cardiac diseases and other health ailments. People were screened, evaluated, diagnosed and free medicines were given as per the requirements.
In order to address health disparities there is a need to boost educational framework and promote the people especially from the disadvantaged section and far flung areas to receive basic education. Revisiting educational policy with primary emphasis on health education at the primary and secondary level could be a strategy for improving public health to start with. But an approach entailing involvement of all stakeholders of the civil society is the call for the day in order to educate the people with the vision that better health is an important corollary to it,” Dr Sharma said.
Other who were instrumental in this endeavour includes Dr Dhaneshwar Kapoor, Dr Kewal Sharma, Dr Akhil Gupta and  Dr Ashish Khajuria, . Paramedics and Volunteers who were part of the team, included Rohit Khajuria, Vikas Kumar, Bhanu Pratap Singh, Akshay Kumar, Gourav Sharma, Ankush Kohli, Vikas Sabharwal, Raghav Rajput, Kamal Sharma, Suresh Baigra and Nitesh Gupta.
