JAMMU, Oct 12: The e-Rickshaw Union of Jammu today expressed disappointment against the Government for harassing poor drivers plying e-rickshaw on Jammu roads and demanded proper guidelines for running e-Rickshaws in the city.
Addressing a press conference Tejinder Pal Singh, chairman e-Rickshaw Union Jammu said for the last six months e-Rickshaws have been allowed by the district administration to run on Jammu roads without any norms but now the Traffic Police has started harassing e-Rickshaw drivers by fining them on the pretext of driving license.
He claimed that the Union Minister for Transport, Nitin Gadkari has clearly said that e-Rickshaws would not be considered as motor vehicles and hence won’t be covered under the Motor Vehicles Act.
“Hence for e-Rickshaw there is no need of a driving license,” Singh said.
He further asked if the rules and norms of District Administration Jammu are above the directions of Union Transport Ministry.
Singh said that even the government sponsored agencies have provided liberal financing to small and poor entrepreneurs in Jammu for generating income through e-Rickshaws but suddenly the Traffic Police has started harassing e-Rickshaw drivers on the name of driving license.
He claimed that they are plying e-Rickshaw on Jammu roads with the consent of local ARTOs on identified routes.
Singh appealed to the concerned authorities to allow e-Rickshaws with minimum conditions till the concerned department comes out with proper guidelines.
Gurpreet Singh, president e-Rickshaw Union; Jatinder Singh, Vippan Singh, Manjeet Singh, Atul Sharma, Rohit Nargotra, Suresh Sharma, Harbhajan Singh and others were also present in the press conference.
