Srinagar, June 26: Nearly 70 households in Umar Lane-B, located in the Qamarabad area of Srinagar, are currently grappling with a severe drinking water shortage, leading to extreme hardships for the residents.
The residents are deeply concerned about the absence of drinking water in the area for the past 20 days. According to the residents, the supply line was inadvertently damaged by a heavy vehicle, and they have expressed disappointment in the Jal Shakti department’s failure to promptly address the issue
The absence of drinking water has compelled the residents to travel to nearby areas in order to get water, which proves to be a strenuous task, particularly in the scorching heat. “Every day, all my family members, including women and children, have to travel to the nearby area to fetch water, which is humiliating, to say the least,” a resident said.
The lack of water poses particular challenges for women, as it hampers their ability to carry out daily chores such as washing clothes and cooking. “Water is the most essential thing one needs in their lives. We cannot cook our food or wash our clothes without it. What makes it worse is the sweltering heat when the requirement actually doubles,” a concerned woman said.
Expressing his plight, another resident revealed the difficulties faced due to the water shortage. “I have not been able to bathe for the last week despite the ongoing heat wave. When the sun is blazing, we should be bathing more than once, but we are unable to keep ourselves clean and cool due to the lack of water. Some individuals have resorted to visiting their relatives in order to fulfil their basic bathing needs,” he said.
Bashir Ahmad, Executive Engineer at the Jal Shakti Department, said that they had conducted a recent visit to the area and formulated a proposal to address the issue permanently. “We have submitted a proposal for a permanent solution to the problem and are awaiting the nod from the Chief Engineer. In the meantime, we will provide them with interim relief,” he said.
