Jammu, Oct 16: Dr. Vivak M. Arya Assistant Professor, working in the division of soil science of SKUAST-Jammu received best research paper award in 5th J&K Agriculture Science Congress on “Climate Change Management for Sustainable Agriculture, Livestock Farming and Ecological Development” held at SKUAST -J.
The award was presented by Prof. Nazeer Ahmad, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST- K & Prof. K.S. Risam, Vice Chancellor SKUAST-J. The agriculture science congress was attended by more than 300 delegates which include many distinguish scientists from across the country.
The paper co- authored by Prof. Vikas Sharma & Ajay Thakur entitled the effect of different soil & water conservation modules on water quality in the adopted village ponds of North – Western Himalayas. The Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated using different parameters viz; pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), electrical conductivity (EC), temperature, turbidity, total coli forms, nitrate & total dissolved solids (TDS).
The study revealed that there is an improvement in water quality index of adopted ponds. The water conserved in the ponds is used for vegetable cultivations, life saving irrigation & for livestock consumption.
The research work revealed that there is an increase in water table, water productivity & decrease in sediment yield due to the use of different soil & water conservation modules. The research work was widely appreciated by delegates and scientists present in the congress.
