SRINAGAR, June 14: The vital road from Baramulla to Hajibal in north Kashmir has been in a dilapidated condition for several years, causing severe hardships for residents and hindering the village’s tourism potential.
Located about 10 km from Baramulla town, the road to Hajibal becomes particularly treacherous during the winter season. Accumulating up to 12 feet of snow, the road often gets disconnected from the district headquarters, exacerbating the difficulties faced by the residents.
“Every winter, we are cut off from the rest of the district. The heavy snowfall makes travel impossible, and we are left stranded,” Bashir Ahmad, a local, said.
The village of Hajibal holds significant potential for tourism, which could greatly benefit the local economy. “We have always been keen to develop tourism in our village, but the poor condition of the road is a major hindrance,” another resident said. The residents believe that improving the road infrastructure is crucial to attract tourists and boost economic activity in the region. Despite repeated appeals, authorities have yet to address the issue.
The locals said they have repeatedly appealed to the administration to macadamize the road, but their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. “Our roads have been neglected for too long. We urge the authorities to take immediate action and repair the road to alleviate our sufferings,” Abdul Rehman, a local said.
