SRINAGAR, Apr 20: Undeterred by the heavy rains,  priests and devotees today held special prayers for peace and harmony on the occasion of Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti festival at the Shankaracharya Temple here.
Housed on the peak of a hill in Srinagar, the temple is considered as the oldest place of worship for Hindus in the Valley and is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Nearly 150 devotees along with the priests who had come from the Kachipuram Shankaracharya of Bangalore today performed special Havan for the peace of the State. Several local Hindu devotees also participated in the Puja.

“Today we performed a special type of Havan called “Ishti” wherein we pray to Agni- the god of fire – for peace,” a devotee said, adding the priests made a special prayer for the peace and harmony of Kashmir.
The priest said they have been celebrating this festival in Srinagar for the last seven years. “This practice was started by our Guru, Acharya Ji, Sri Jayander Saraswati. The Guru ji has ordered us to continue this practice and we are following his footsteps,” a priest said, adding “we are visiting the Shankaracharya hills for past 8 years and would continue in the future as well”.
The devotees said they prayed for peace in the same way their Guru had taught them. “Our Guru is for the whole world and he taught us to pray for the peace, harmony and brotherhood, especially for Kashmir. We are continuing his practice,” devotees said.
