Deptt of Pediatrics in GMC Jammu observes Intl Thalassemia Day

JAMMU, May 9: On the occasion of International Thalassemia Day, Department of Pediatrics, Government Medical College, Jammu, in collaboration with J&K Thalassemia Welfare Society and IAP J&K Branch, organized a programme at SMGS Hospital Jammu here today to spread awareness amongst the community about Thalassemia Disease and caring for those affected by the disease.
Head of Pediatrics Department, Dr Ghanshyam Saini apprised the gathering about the importance of this day and the work being done in the Thalassemia Day Care Centre in SMGS Hospital, Jammu. He informed that Thalassemia Day Care Centre in SMGS Hospital, Jammu is the only centre in J&K providing facilities to the Thalassemic patients and at present 293 children are getting treatment in this Center. He stressed that the patient should complete his/her treatment.
Further, Consultant In-charge Thalassemia Day Care Centre, Dr Sanjeev Kumar Digra delivered a lecture regarding awareness about Thalassemia in children. He urged the parents and families of the individuals with Thalassemia to maintain Hb levels of the patient above 10gm% with regular blood transfusions. He also advised them to take regular medicine to remove excess iron from their body. He conveyed that with timely and adequate treatment, the individuals with Thalassemia can lead a healthy & productive life. He shared that many of these Thalassemic children from this Center are doing marvels in various fields like medicine, engineering, physiotherapy, business, management etc.
Children under treatment in SMGS Hospital, Jammu presented cultural programme on this occasion and the organizers also arranged a Magic show for these children. Further, gifts were also distributed amongst these children.
On this occasion, the staff of Thalassemia Day Care Centre, SMGS Hospital, Jammu were felicitated for their services. These included Dr Dilpreet Kour, Medical Officer; Nursing I/c Madhu Bala; Malti Sharma, Staff Nurse; Sugandhi, Lab Technician and Parveen Akhter.
The other eminent personalities present on this occasion were: Dr. Meena Sidhu, HOD Blood Transfusion Medicine Department; Dr. Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital; Dr Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Dy Medical Superintendent; Dr Narinder Singh, Associate Professor, Pediatric Surgery, Dr. Suman Kotwal, Associate Professor, Endocrinology Department, Dr Anil Thapa, Associate Professor, Biochemistry Department, Dr Anchal, Associate Professor, Radiodiagnosis Department; Dr Navneet Kour from Red Cross Society.
