Srinagar, May 14: Police today arrested a cop, who threw shoe at Chief Minister Omar Abdullah three years ago on Independence Day function at Srinagar’s Bakhshi Stadium, for robbing a truck driver on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway last night.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) Awantipora, Abdul Waheed told Excelsior that Police arrested retired cop, Abdul Ahad Jan, the police man who threw shoe at the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on August 15 soon after he unfurled National Flag at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium in 2010.
Jan was arrested and suspended after shoe throwing incident and later released after a couple of days in 2010. Later, Jan retired from police.
The SP Awantipora said that a police uniform and Rs 38,000 were recovered from him. A case has been registered against him in police Station Pampore for robbery.
Police while acting upon a complaint lodged by a truck driver Kulwinder Singh son of Milki Singh of Hoshiarpur, Punjab arrested Jan for robbing him of Rs 38, 000.
Kulwinder Singh in his complaint had said that he briefly halted his truck bearing registration number PB07AF 6007 on roadside at Gallander near Pampore on national highway. “A police officer came inside the truck and checked documents of the truck. The police officer accompanied me and asked me to drop him at Letpora Police lines in Pampora area. After checking my documents a kilometre away from Letpora Police Lines, I found Rs 38, 000 missing from my truck”, said the truck driver in his complaint.
Police after preliminary investigation regarding the description of the police officer who robbed him suspected that it was Ahad Jan. He was shown a picture of Jan and the driver identified him.
Police later raided house of Ahad Jan in Ajas Bandipora and detained his son from his house. On his tip off, police raided several locations in Srinagar and finally arrested Jan from Dalgate. However, his son was later let off.
Police said that Jan’s cell phone location during the time of robbery was found between Pampore and Letpora in police district Awantipora.
Police said that last year Police Station Pantha Chowk also received a similar complaint of highway robbery and they arrested Jan as his mobile phone was found in the same truck whose driver he had robbed.
Police said that early this year, there was another case of highway robbery but the complainant driver didn’t pursue the case.
Police said Jan has several cases of robbery registered against him in several Police Stations. “He is being questioned for other robbery cases”, police added.
