LEH, Aug 19: Demanding immediate relief package for temporary and permanent restoration in Ladakh region, District Congress Committee (DCC) workers led by its President Tsering Samphel along with LAHDC CEC Rigzin Spalbar held protest near Deputy Commissioner Office.
DCC started the mass protest against the casual attitude of the BJP led Central Government by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP-PDP coalition Government headed by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed towards the unprecedented devastating cloud burst and flash floods throughout the nook and corner of the District.
The protestors alleged that the Central and State Governments have failed to provide even a penny to the affected people of the District. The family members of 105 are living in tents whose residential houses have been fully washed away and the lives of the other 158 families are in danger whose residential houses are partially damaged. Standing crops over an area of 3830 kanals have been filled with mud debris and hundreds of families will have to face starvation, they added.
“Thousands of heads works of irrigation khuls have been washed away and needs permanent restoration in various villages and hamlets involving crores of rupees besides hundreds of foot bridges and dozen of motorable bridges needs immediate restoration. 3 precious lives have been lost and around 20,000 well grown precious standing willow and poplar trees have been washed away”, they stated.
DCC President Tsering Samphel, CEC Rigzin Spalbar and Nubra MLA Deldan Namgyal addressed the gathering at Polo Ground. Senior Congress leaders including former Minister P Namgyal, JKPCC Vice President Norbo Gailchan, LAHDC CEC Rigzin Spalbar, EC Agriculture Sonam Dorjay, EC Gurmet Dorjay, DYC President Tsering Namgyal, Mahilla Congress President Rinchen Dolkar, Councilors Tsering Angmo, Tashi Anmog and Ghulam Abidi sat on Dharna in support of protest.
CEC and Executive Councilor and Councilors of Congress announced an amount of Rs 5.16 laks as relief to the flood victims out of their salaries.
Meanwhile Jamyang Tsering Namgyal Private Secretary to Ladakh MP Thupstan Chhewang in a press handout claims that MP in a memorandum demanded interim financial packages separately for the two Districts of Leh and Kargil to enable the authorities to carry out essential relief and restoration works out of State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) and accordingly State Government agreed to sanction interim relief of Rs 20 crores to Leh and Rs 10 crores to Kargil district as an interim relief.
