JAMMU, Feb 10: Former Minister Thakur Randhir Singh today demanded that the name of the Agriculture University be changed to Baba Jitto Agriculture University, Jammu instead of Sher-e-Kashmir University.
He said Baba Jitto was a revolutionary farmer who sacrificed his life for the farmer community and famous fair is being organized to commemorate his sacrifice at Jhiri. Singh, who is also national president of Aromatic Plants Growers Association of India (APGAI) also demanded appointment of new Vice Chancellor from outside with agriculture background.
The issue was raised by the former Minister when a progressive farmer Ranjit Singh (president, APGAI J&K UT) along with Saifullah Khan (president, APGAI, Kashmir province) met him and presented organic Brocilli grown by him. He said there is no awareness of consumption of this herbal vegetable which act against the cancer and stomach diseases.
Singh regretted that SKUAST-Jammu contributed nothing in the field of Agriculture because most of the Vice Chancellors came from Veterinary stream and all were Kashmir centric and involved in corruption charges.
