Cement companies fined for not passing benefits

KATHUA, Jan 16: A team of Legal Metrology Department conducted thorough inspection of companies dealing with cement trade and edible oils to ensure that the tax reduction price benefit must reach to the ultimate consumers due to abolishment of Toll Plaza at Lakhanpur.
The team was entrusted with the responsibility to ascertain that whether the MRP has been reduced by the companies on the cement bags and other items as the levy of toll taxes has been stopped from 1st January, 2020 in the UT on all the trades .
The team inspected the CFA’s of M/S Ambuja Cement Ltd at Kunjwani, M/s ACC Ltd at Narwal and M/s JK Wall Putty at Trikuta Nagar extension.
During inspection, it was found that the companies have not taken steps to lower the MRPs of cement bags and accordingly sale of all the deceptive bags was stopped and the management of the respective companies were put on notice for the violation of the provisions of the Legal Metrology Laws as the benefit of Rs 64 per bag of 50 kg of cement must pass on to the consumers by lowering the MRP.
The management of Ambuja and ACC companies provided undertaking to reduce the MRP by Rs 65 w.e.f from 15th of January, 2020 and all bags were labeled with the reduced MRP stickers for the information of consumers. Both the companies were fined for Rs 50,000 each for the omissions.
The team also inspected the company outlet of P Mark edible oil at Ware House at Vikram Chowk. The president and other office bearers of the Ware House Association were told to apprise all their members to pass on the tax reduction benefit of all items to the consumers.
