LEH, May 30: Chief Executive Councilor LAHDC, Leh Rigzin Spalbar has sought intervention of Minister for Health and Medical Education and ARI and Training, Choudhary Lal Singh for proper functioning of SNM Hospital Leh.
In a communiqué addressed to Minister, CEC mentioned that District Hospital Leh being the only District Hospital is catering to the whole region including patients from Zanskar and Kargil district under constrained resource and difficulty.
“Some of the impediments which need immediate intervention are Human Resources, Meager Annual Budget, Trauma Centre, up gradation of Casualty Block, Central Sterilization Department CSSD, Requirement of MRI, Mammography, Renal Dialysis unit, Densitometry, Hyperbaric, Oxygen Chamber, facility for Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy”, Spalbar wrote.
Briefing about the Human Resources, the CEC mentioned that due to the opening of different new departments like Geriatric ward, Tourist ward, ICCU, PICU, SNCU Orthopedic ward and Ophthalmic ward the bed strength of the Hospital has increased from 150 to 300. The present staff strength of Hospital is only for 150 beds, as the sanctioned bed strength is only 150 beds. Previously there was only one ward each for Medical, Gynea, Surgical and Pediatrics ward. Now there are 4 wards for Gynecology Department, 2 wards each for Pediatric, Surgical, Medical and one ward each for ENT and Ophthalmology department. The Hospital is facing severe shortage of human resource, and has put up a heavy constraint on present available manpower, which is being stretched to the limit. The required staff strength needs to be sanctioned and recruited, he stated.
“Hospital has been compromising with the resources like drugs by making the patients buy these from the market instead of providing it free” he disclosed.
In view of the insufficient manpower, meager budget, long distance to higher centers like Srinagar, Jammu and Delhi, remoteness and harsh geo-climatic condition and closure of National Highway during the winters months, the strengthening of the District Hospital (SNM Hospital) is imperative and crucial to sustain this hilly border region’s health care system, Spalbar added.
