Sir,
Striding through the June 14, issue of the ‘DE’, one is marveled and enchanted by the valor, discipline, chivalry and unmatched loyalty shown by the true soldier embodied in Brig. Rajinder Singh Ji. The indomitable bravery displayed by this warrior, heading a mere 100 ill-equipped men, will go unmatched in the annals of military history anywhere on this planet. Why the Chief of the state forces was handicapped for manpower, was mainly because his own men in the force betrayed him and crossed to the enemy. In other words, the men whom he trained to defend the then J&K, joined the Pak regulars and tribesmen in treachery. They knew every inch of the terrain to enter the vale in complicity,to betray the Ruler. Credit goes to the bravest Brigadier who fought to the last man and last bullet to wrestle J&K away from the Pak-tribesmen-regulars combine. This true soldier deserves a day of remembrance as a holiday.
Last but not the least, our erstwhile Maharaja can’t be absolved from his aberrant indecisiveness, wavering and faltering attitude with regard to accession to either of the dominions, before the already set deadline that was Aug.13,’47. Most of the 550 princes ruling the rest of India had already acceded pre-Aug.13. History may not forgive the Ruler for his indefinite delay beyond mid-August, that could possibly have averted the bloodshed and the consequent dispute and it’s aftermath.
Yours etc….
