Brahman Sabha demands OBC status for Purohit community

JAMMU, Nov 28: Dogra Brahman Pratinidhi Sabha has demanded OBC status for Purohit section of Brahmans.
The demand was raised during a meeting of the Brahman Sabha office bearers, held here today under the chairmanship of Ved Parkash Sharma, President of the Sabha.
Sharma disclosed that several memorandums were submitted to the various authorities of the LG administration, including Chairperson J&K Socially & Educationally Backward Classes Commission. However,, he added, no action has been taken till date.
Sharma said that Purohits are important institution of “Sanatan Hindu Society” who are economically dependent on the meager charity/offerings presented by their Yajmans on only to prove themselves worthy to their profession. “The Purohits have to keep themselves up to date with the study of religious scripture and also practice tuff rituals throughout the day and during all the season to maintain their position as Purohit. In these circumstances they cannot opt any other recourse for earning. They hardly can make there both hands meet. They are often fall short of money to provide modern education to their wards,” he explained.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman of the Sabha, Advocate PC Sharma said that Purohits are socially, educationally and economically so backward that they deserve to be included into the category of Backward Class.
Tawi Andolan President Advocate Chander Mohan Sharma, who was also present in the meeting, appealed to all the Pandits, Pujaris and Purohits to register themselves with the office of Dogra Brahmin Pratinidhi Sabha Jammu for further course of action for their socio – economic upliftment.
The meeting was addressed by Satyanand Sharma , B M Magotra, Subash Shastri, Madan Mohan Sharma , M L Padha, Satpal Sharma, Gurdas Sharma, Ramesh Sharma, Raj Kumar, Sunil Sharma, K L Sharma, J N Sharma, Rajesh Bargotra and several others.
