Property attached in anti-drug drive, 2 held

SRINAGAR, June 2: Police today intensified its anti-drug campaign across Kashmir by attaching property linked to drug trafficking, arresting two alleged drug peddlers, destroying illegal narcotics cultivation and conducting awareness programmes.
A Police spokesperson said Police in Pulwama attached a double-storey residential house worth about Rs 19.65 lakh belonging to an accused involved in an NDPS case registered at Police Station Rajpora. The property, located at Housing Colony Ompora, Budgam, was attached under Section 68(F) of the NDPS Act after investigation revealed that it was allegedly acquired through proceeds of illicit narcotic trafficking.

In separate anti-narcotics operations, the spokesperson said, Police arrested two drug peddlers in Anantnag and Ganderbal districts. In Anantnag, Police recovered about six grams of heroin-like substance, Rs. 11,700 in cash and other items from the possession of an accused arrested at Mattan Morh, Kehribal. In Ganderbal, another accused was arrested after a charas-like substance was recovered during naka checking at Baghpati Surfraw. Cases under the NDPS Act have been registered and investigations are underway.
The spokesperson said anti-drug enforcement drives were also conducted in Baramulla, Sopore, Anantnag and Pulwama, leading to the destruction of wild cannabis and illegally cultivated poppy crops. Wild cannabis spread over about one kanal of land was destroyed in Baramulla, while similar cultivation was destroyed in Sopore. “In Anantnag and Pulwama, illegal poppy crops detected during joint operations with civil departments were destroyed on the spot and cases were registered,” the spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the Police Drug De-Addiction Centre Anantnag organised an awareness-cum-drug abuse prevention programme at Higher Secondary School Brakpora, attended by more than 300 students. “Experts sensitised students about the harmful effects of drug abuse, peer pressure, mental health issues, stress management and the importance of making healthy life choices,” the spokesperson said.
