Rajouri, Apr 9: A series of talks were organised by Centre for Biodiversity Studies, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University on understanding the structure, reproduction and importance of bryophytes and gymnosperms in which experts from Jammu University were invited for the talks.
Prof. Yash Pal Shamra, Head Department of Botany, University of Jammu and Prof. Anima Langer, Former Dean, Life Sciences, University of Jammu, where invited for delivering the talks.
In his talk, Prof. Yash Pal Shamra, highlighted the structural diversity, reproduction and economic importance of gymnosperms, the naked-seeded plants.
After giving a general overview, he deliberated on the morphology and anatomy of vegetative and reproductive organs of two interesting orders – Ephedrales and Welwitschiales.
He also gave practical demonstration on various morphological and anatomical characteristics of gymnosperms, including variations in the male and female cones of Pinus, Cycas, Thuja, and Cupressus, morphology of long and dwarf shoots of Ginkgo biloba, and basic techniques of section cutting and double staining procedure in gymnosperms.
This was followed by a series of lectures by Prof. Anima Langer. She enlightened the PG students of Botany about general characteristics of byrophytes, the amphibians of plant kingdom. She acquainted the students about the morphology and anatomical diversity of gametophytes and sporophytes, vegetative and sexual reproduction and life history patterns in Bryopsida.
The 2 days lecture series was followed by hands on training on the morphology and reproductive structure of some important mosses.
Prof. G. H. Dar, Director, Centre for Biodiversity Studies, stressed that the prime objective of this programme was to acquaint our students with basic concepts and understanding of structural botany and its importance in present-day teaching and research in Botany.
