JAMMU, Sept 13: The completion of non-interlocking work today and subsequent commissioning of Bari Brahmana Railway Station has set into motion the work for expansion of Jammu Tawi Railway Station to which two more platforms will be added under the Redevelopment Project worth Rs 230 crores.
Further, with the commissioning of remodeled Yard at Bari Brahmana Railway Station, all the trains from Jammu and Katra will now resume normal operations from tomorrow.
Several trains, to and fro from Jammu and Katra, had remained cancelled, short -terminated or rescheduled because of the work at Bari Brahmana Railway Station, which began on August 21 for a period of 24 days. All such trains will now resume normal operations from tomorrow.
“With the completion of work, Bari Brahmana Railway Station will now serve as a satellite freight terminal of Jammu Tawi Railway Station. All freight trains, except those carrying fuel from Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Food Corporation of India (FCI) goods will now halt at Bari Brahmana terminal in Samba district and not enter Jammu Tawi Railway Station,” said Jammu Station Director Uchit Singhal.
At Bari Brahmana Railway Station, there will be three freight handling lines apart from two military handling lines and four coaching lines. Earlier, there were only six lines, four running lines and two freight lines.
Now the freight trains carrying goods like cement, bitumen, iron etc will stop at Bari Brahmana Railway Station thus decongesting Jammu Tawi Railway Station from freight traffic and paving way for the expansion of Jammu Station under Redevelopment Project worth Rs 230 crores.
With the expansion, two more platforms will be added to Jammu Tawi Railway Station which will have two entry and exit points from existing Bahu Plaza end and new one from Narwal end.
The addition of two new platforms will increase the total number of platforms at Jammu Tawi Railway Station from three to five thus enhancing more passenger train traffic here and benefitting people.
Presently, 33 trains ply daily at Jammu Tawi Railway Station and this number is likely to reach near 50 after expansion of the station and addition of two more platforms.
Initial work under the Redevelopment Project for the expansion of Jammu Railway Station has already been started with soil testing survey and land clearing.
According to the sources, construction and allied works will begin next month after removal of the existing goods shed in next few days and the entire Redevelopment Project will be completed in next 30 months.
Pertinent to mention that the expansion of Jammu Tawi Railway Station was announced in 2014 when it was proposed as Jammu Railway Division but due to some unavoidable hiccups, the project could not take off. Jammu Railway Station was constructed in the year 1970 with three platforms and two washing lines. Since then, the infrastructure at Jammu Railway Station has not been despite the fact that every day more than 30 trains arrive and depart from here for various destinations across the country.
