KATRA, Apr 30: MLA, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi constituency, Baldev Raj Sharma, today met the Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, during his visit to Katra, and strongly projected key public issues concerning district Reasi and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi region. He was accompanied by Ex DDC Chairman Reasi, Saraf Singh Nag, ex BDC Panthal, Chander Mohan Singh, ex Sarpanchs, Sudesh Sharma, Mangal Singh and Bhuri Singh Nag, among others.
The MLA submitted memorandum highlighting several important demands for further strengthening infrastructure and improving public convenience.
He stressed the need for a direct and shorter railway line between Katra and Jammu to reduce travel time and decongest existing routes. He also demanded the operation of a special sightseeing train service from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station to Anji Bridge and the iconic Chenab Bridge to promote tourism and showcase the region’s engineering marvels and scenic beauty.
The MLA emphasized the importance of developing a multipurpose playground near Katra Railway Station for local youth and railway staff to encourage sports and a healthy lifestyle. He sought extension of the existing DMU service from Pathankot–Udhampur up to Katra to ensure seamless connectivity for commuters and visitors.
He also demanded the establishment of a maintenance workshop at Katra Railway Station in view of the increasing number of trains, which would ensure efficient upkeep and generate employment opportunities in the region. Additionally, he strongly pressed for the upgradation of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Hospital with modern facilities and the provision of a dedicated ambulance to strengthen healthcare services.
Highlighting a long-pending public demand, the MLA urged for the construction of an alternative access road for residents of Arli, Paroh, Dhanao and Tunn, who currently face significant inconvenience due to dependence on the railway station route, especially during security restrictions and VIP movements.
The Railway Minister assured that the demands would be examined and taken up on priority.
