SAMBA, Jan 4: General Officer Commanding (GOC) Rising Star Corps Lieutenant General YVK Mohan inaugurated the expansion of facilities at Army Public School here today.
The facilities include fourteen new classrooms, horse riding club, synthetic volleyball court and a fully equipped gymnasium. These facilities, especially the added classrooms, would go a long way in meeting the needs of wards of serving soldiers and veterans of Samba District.
The expanded Olive Green Bakery at Samba Military Station was inaugurated by Y Geetha Mohan, President AWWA, Rising Star Corps.
The Olive Green Bakery, which is a unique venture between Army Wives Welfare Association, Samba and Aseem Foundation, a Pune based NGO, empowers military widows by enabling them to earn a livelihood by baking cookies. These cookies are marketed nationwide by Aseem Foundation through e-commerce. The bakery was initially established on April 24 last year and was functioning from a temporary premise with only one oven. Five widows were baking Apple Walnut flavour of cookies that soon became an instant hit. As more people appreciated the initiative and online sales started, there was an increase in demand for the cookies.
Samba Military Station and Aseem Foundation (supported by the GMR Group) have now expanded the bakery at a new premise. The bakery now employee 8 military widows using three ovens to produce two additional flavours namely Whole Wheat Choco Chips and Choco Oats.
The inauguration function was attended by Lieutenant General YVK Mohan, General Officer Commanding Rising Star Corps, Major General K Narayanan, General Officer Commanding Gurj Division, Brigadier Anil Raman, Station Commander, Samba Military Station and Revati Narayanan, President AWWA, Gurj Division.
During the function, the military widows were felicitated by Y Geetha Mohan who commended their dedication and service. This venture has gone a long way in empowering military widows of Samba District as well as highlighted their sacrifices to the nation.
