6 hostel rooms of NIT damaged in midnight blaze

Srinagar, Feb 20: At least 6 hostel rooms of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Hazratbal were damaged in a blaze that broke out during the intervening night of February 19-20.
As per the officials of the Fire & Emergency Services, the fire broke out around midnight in the ‘Jhelum Hostel Block- A of the NIT’-a 3 storied building housing students. They said that soon after they got the emergency call, the fire tenders along with the men reached the spot and carried out the fire fighting.
Officials said that 2 nearby fire stations, Hazratbal and Rainawari, were rushed to the spot to douse down the flames, which were finally brought under control after the strenuous efforts that lasted for over two hours.
While there was no injury reported, the officials said that 6 rooms, along with a lobby on the second floor as well as the attic portion were involved in the fire.
The cause of the fire, however, has not been confirmed as yet even as the officials said the same is currently being investigated by the police.
“In the fire incident, roofing, ceiling, doors, windows, furniture, bedding of the students residing in the hostel were partially damaged,” officials said.
