LADAKH, Oct 12: Bonona, a special 5-day festival of the Brokpas of Dha, Baima, Dartsig and Garkone concluded today.
The festival is celebrated once in three years. The five day festival also called ‘Chhopo Srub-la’ started on October 8. It is a festival of thanks giving to their Gods and Deities for good crops and prosperity to the community.
During the festival, the Brokpas and Brokmos in their finest traditional dresses and ornaments sing and dance with a series of folk songs which carries the history of their ancestors.
In order to preserve and promote the Brokpa’s unparalleled traditions and culture and to pass on these values to the younger generation, Information Department Leh on the 2nd day of the festival organized a one day cultural training to the young Brokpas and Brokmos which was attended by a good number of young people.
Speaking on the occasion, the AD Information, Leh Sonam Norbu, strongly urged upon the young Brokpas to carry forward their amazing culture and remain deeply rooted with their traditional values.
Few senior Brokpa experts also spoke about the significance of Brokpa’s cultural identity and highlighted as to how it is important for younger generation to keep their distinct identity alive and continue for posterity.
The Brokpa of Ladakh said to be the last of the Aryans. The historians and anthropologists are lured by the last Aryan village located in lower Indus basin in Ladakh. Unlike the majority of Ladakhis with Tibeto-Mongol looks, the Brokpa have Indo-Aryan features.
