Srinagar, Oct 10: A fierce encounter between security forces and militants that broke out early this morning is on in Handwara forest area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
A senior police officer said that they received information about presence of 2-3 militants in the forest area of Peth Wudar in Handwara yesterday. He said that in the morning there was a brief encounter after which militants fled away.
The officer said that in the evening there was again contact with these militants and now they have been trapped. He said that the cordon has been strengthened and intermittent firing is on.
Sources said that Army’s 21 RR, Army’s 6 RR and Police launched massive searches in several forest areas connecting Hafruda area for last several days since 4 Army personnel were killed in an attack on October 5 in Tilpathri forest area.
They said that this morning Army’s 21 RR intercepted the group of militants at Wader Balla forest area. After being intercepted, the joint team of Army’s 21 RR, 92 bn CRPF and SOG engaged the group in a gun battle.
When last reports came, the intermittent exchange of firing was going on in the area.
Militants last night gave slip to forces during a brief encounter in Lolab area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Acting on information regarding the presence of three militants, Army’s 18 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group of police cordoned off Ken Nad forest area of Affan village in Warnow of Lolab sector last night started combing operation to flush out the suspected militants.
As such the joint party intensified the combing operation. Militants present there opened fire on the search party which was retaliated triggering an encounter. However, they managed to escape.
A joint team of security forces along with the additional reinforcement launched massive searches in the adjoining forest areas to nab the militants. However, when reports last came, no one has been arrested.
One militant was killed in Dardpora area of Lolab on October 5.
