3 injured in shell explosion

SRINAGAR, May 26:
Three persons were injured when an old shell, used as artillery firing range by the Army, exploded in Tosa-Maidan in central Kashmir district of Budgam. A senior police official said that an accidental shell blast took place in Tosa Maidan (old artillery range) Khag area of Budgam.

“Three persons were injured and have being shifted to hospital,” he added. Official sources said that the condition of one of the injured is critical. In past, dozens of people have lost their lives while scores of others injured due to explosion of old shells in the meadow.
The area was used by Army as an artillery firing range from 1964 to 2014, when the lease was not extended by the then Government. After that, Army launched a sanitization drive to clear the live old shells in the area.
However, few incidents of old shells exploding were reported after the sanitization drive. (UNI)
