38 seater bus was carrying 59 passengers

UDHAMPUR, Jan 24: Two persons were killed and 57 others got injured when an overloaded passenger bus slipped into a deep gorge near Khu Nallah on Udhampur- Ramnagar road, under the jurisdiction of Udhampur Police Station, this afternoon.
The 38 seater bus was carrying 59 passengers, including five children. One person died on the spot while another succumbed to his injuries at Sub-District Hospital Ramnagar.
The accident took place around 2.15 pm when the bus, bearing registration number JK02Q-5353, was on its way from Udhampur to Ramnagar and according to the driver, he lost control over the vehicle because of slippery conditions on the sloppy road near Khu Nallah. The bus skidded off the road and slipped into about 100 feet deep gorge resulting into on spot death of one person and injuries to 58 others.
Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Ravinder Kumar and SSP Udhampur Rajiv Pandey along with police team rushed to the spot and started rescue operation with the help of locals. The injured persons were shifted to District Hospital Udhampur and Sub-District Hospital Ramnagar.
One of the injured succumbed to his injuries at Ramnagar Hospital taking the death toll to two. Two injured were referred to Military Hospital Udhampur and two others to Government Medical College Hospital Jammu in view of their serious condition.
The deceased were identified as Mohamed Haruan (25), son of Nazir Ahmed of Khu Nallah and Krishan Lal (72), son of Shonku Ram of Ramnagar.
Till last reports came in, 11 persons were undergoing treatment at Sub-District Hospital Ramnagar and 40 others were admitted at District Hospital Udhampur.
DIG Udhampur-Reasi Range, Suleman Choudhary, Ex MLA Udhampur Pawan Kumar Gupta and Ex MLA Ramnagar, Ranbir Singh Pathania visited hospital and took stock of the arrangements for best possible treatment to the injured.
For immediate relief to the victims, cash assistance of Rs 20 thousand has been provided to each critically injured passenger and Rs 10 thousand each to other injured, through Red Cross Society.
