JAMMU, Apr 26: Yuva Rajput Sabha (YRS) today organized a solemn tribute ceremony to mark the 65th death anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh at his statue near Maharaja Hari Singh Bridge (Tawi Bridge) in Jammu.
Members of the Sabha paid floral tributes by garlanding the statue and observed a two-minute silence in memory of the former ruler, recalling his enduring contributions to the region. The ceremony witnessed participation from office bearers and members of the organization, who gathered to honour the legacy of the Maharaja.
Speaking on the occasion, Sabha president Mandeep Singh “Rimpy” described Maharaja Hari Singh as a visionary leader who was ahead of his time. He highlighted key reforms introduced during his reign, including free and compulsory primary education, abolition of untouchability, and the establishment of a modern judicial system. He also underlined the Maharaja’s historic decision to accede Jammu and Kashmir to India in 1947, terming it a crucial step taken in the larger interest of the people during a period of crisis.
Expressing concern, Mandeep Singh said it was unfortunate that no political party, government official or other organization came forward to hold a formal programme to mark the occasion, calling it a matter of disappointment for those who revere the Maharaja’s legacy.
Former president and core committee member Vikram Singh “Vicky” also addressed the gathering and criticized what he termed as selective remembrance of Maharaja Hari Singh by political entities. He remarked that while many parties prominently use the Maharaja’s image during election campaigns, their absence on such significant occasions reflects a lack of genuine respect.
Other speakers, including Pushvinder Singh, Vishal Singh, Avtar Singh, Bhanu Pratap, Vishav Singh and Sanju Singh, also paid tributes and shared their views on the Maharaja’s legacy.
The programme concluded with participants taking a pledge to uphold the ideals of unity, integrity and social welfare championed by the late ruler.
