JAMMU, June 9: A young woman, working as Lecturer of Mathematics in Govt Higher Secondary, School Satwari (Narwal Pain) in Jammu, allegedly committed suicide by hanging at her in-laws’ residence at Ekta Vihar in Kalu Chak area falling under the jurisdiction of Gangyal Police Station today.
Alleging that the woman was being harassed by the in-laws and her husband, Dr Rajneesh Sharma, also a Lecturer; family members and relatives of the woman along with their neighbours staged protest and blocked National Highway (NH) at Kaluchak, near Greater Kailash junction, demanding arrest of the accused persons.
According to SHO Gangyal, the deceased woman has been identified as Parul Sharma (32), wife of Dr Rajneesh Sharma, a resident of Ekta Vihar, Kaluchak. The woman was found hanging with the hook of a ceiling fan at her in-laws’ residence, this morning. After completing legal formalities, the police handed over the body of the woman to her family members.
However, at about 4 pm this evening, the parents and relatives of the woman along with the dead body staged protest and blocked the busy National Highway at Greater Kailash Chowk and disrupted traffic movement for more than three hours. The parents alleged that the husband of the woman used to harass and abuse her verbally for dowry and other pretexts. They demanded a thorough probe into the whole episode and immediate arrest of the husband for abetment of suicide.
A senior police officer and SHO Gangyal, Inspector Ajay Jamwal reached the spot and pacified the protestors by assuring a thorough probe into the matter. When contacted, SHO Gangyal told that they have registered a case under Sections 306, 498- A against the husband of the woman and started investigations. The husband of the deceased woman has been detained for questioning, he added.
The family sources said that Parul, a lecturer in Mathematics was posted at GHSS Narwal Pain Satwari. Her husband Dr Rajneesh Sharma, a Physics lecturer was earlier posted at Govt Ranbir Higher Secondary School, Parade Jammu and was recently transferred to GHSSS Rehari/ Sarwal. He used to beat up and torture Parul and she had been gone to her parents house at Kanal village near Bishnah in protest. She stayed there for 5-6 months and had returned hardly a month back after her husband, brother -in law (Jija) of her husband (Prem Dogra) and other relatives came to kanal and after discussion between two sides, took up the girl to her in-laws house assuring no such action again. They said Rajneesh had snatched her ATM card and even the mobile phone. They alleged that according to doctors, the death took place around mid night while they informed parents side at around 12 noon. They girl was done to death and then hanged to project it as case of suicide. They demanded framing of SIT to probe the case.
