‘Yoga Olympiad 2017’ on June 21 to celebrate IYD

NEW DELHI, June 16: In order to popularise Yoga and give impetus to its practice among the masses so that it is adopted as a routine in everyday life  by all, Yoga Olympiad 2017 is being organised across the country to commemorate third International Day of Yoga on June 21, this year.
Yoga Olympiad 2017 is just one of the initiatives undertaken by the Department of School Education and Literacy to make the populace aware about the benefits of Yoga besides holding workshops, programmes and seminars.
The theme for the Yoga Olympiad is ‘Yoga for Health and Harmony’. The idea behind conducting an Olympiad is that it should feel like an Olympic Sports event or peace run in the field of yoga.
It also intends to develop physical, emotional and mental health through yogic activities.
On the occasion of International Yoga Day, University Grants Commission has requested Vice-Chancellors of all Universities to ensure the maximum participation of students  for the event and further, the students should be trained at least for a month and organise Yoga workshops for college teachers and introduce yoga programme in annual festivals of colleges and universities to promote yoga among youths.
Besides this, UGC has also approved courses on Yoga for BSc (Yoga), MSc (Yoga), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD in Yoga), PG Diploma in Yoga, PG Diploma in Yoga Therapy and has even started Yoga as a subject matter for NET examination.
Students of Technical institutions too will be taught ‘yoga’ thorough workshops , says the government source. IITs, IIITs, IIMs, IISERs, IISc, NITs will chip in too to celebrate IDY, 2017 by organizing several lectures, meditations/ workshops, Yoga camps, Yogasana competitions, Yoga display programmes along with their ongoing Yoga activities throughout the year to inculcate Yoga as a way of life.
First ever “All India Inter NIT Yoga Championship” was organised by NIT Surathkal to instil Yogic lifestyle in students and to make IDY, 2017 a grand success. IIMs are also celebrating International Day of Yoga by practice sessions of Yogasanas, lectures from Yoga experts, speech and felicitation ceremonies, quiz sessions, diet suggestion sessions, and health improvement tips through Yoga breathing or’ Pranayama’.
IGNOU has also confirmed that the University will organise a three-day Yoga festival with various activities of Yoga from June 19 to June 21 commemorating the event with musical programs, Lectures, Illust-rations.
In all its endeavour, Ministry of AYUSH requested that the Educational Institutions may be kept open to celebrate third IDY on June 21 and Action Plan may be uploaded on yoga.ayush.gov.in ? Yoga Portal of Ministry of AYUSH and  a flash message about International Day of Yoga, 2017 hyperlinked to the Yoga Portal.
MHRD too is planning to organise lectures on Yoga on third IDY to create a conducive ambiance among the employees through Yoga exercises, and Celebration of IDY, 2017 has been publicised widely which will infuse Yoga at a wider scale among the employees of the Ministry. (UNI)
