JAMMU, May 11: Department of Wildlife Protection observed World Migratory Bird Day today at Manda Deer Park, here.
The school children, visiting Manda Zoo in the vicinity of Ramnagar Wildlife sanctuary with beautiful forest and rich bird life around, were sensitized to raise awareness among them regarding birds and the threats faced by them in prevailing environmental scenario. This day is observed every year on 11 May and 12 October.
The message from the Chief Wildlife Warden, J&K, Srinagar, Suresh K Gupta was conveyed to the children on the occasion where he stressed upon keeping marsh lands, water bodies, lakes, ponds clean and free of plastic as they are the major habitats of most of the migratory birds.
Regional Wildlife Warden Jammu region Tahir Shawl, while interacting with school children and teachers disseminated the information about the importance of birds in our eco-systems and saving the species pushed on the brink of extinction due to unwise consumerism, modern lifestyle and anthropogenic pressure.
“The theme of the Migratory Bird Day Protect Birds: Be the solution to plastic pollution aptly applies to the current environmental scenario where water bodies, rivers, lakes and ponds have been polluted with enormous amount of plastic waste,” he further informed while divulging into the details.
Facilitated by the Wildlife Warden Jammu Choudhary Shahzad, the Wildlife officials and staff including Gulam Quadir, Range Officer Ramnagar Wildlife Sanctuary, Rishipal, Range Officer Wetlands Jammu, Noor Mufti, Range Officer Manda Zoo, Ashok Kumar, Bushan Lal Block Officers and others were present on the occasion.
The children were also taken to the Indira Gandhi Nature Interpretation Centre, Manda for visual interaction with specimens, pictures and wildlife products including nests, eggs and other articles, for awareness and education.
