JAMMU, May 11: A strong protest was held today at Nardani Chowk in Raipur-Bantalab area of city outskirts by the local inhabitants when a man died due to bite of a stray dog.
According to the reports, a man identified as Bansi Lal (48) son of Dhani Ram, resident of Raipur-Nardani was bitten by a stray dog on April 23 near his residence. On the same day, a minor girl was also bitten by some stray dogs following people of the area had held a protest against the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), alleging that the JMC is releasing the stray dogs of the city in their area due to which the dog bite cases have increased in the area. Though the girl was critical but she survived.
However, Bansi Lal yesterday evening got some fits after which his family members took him to Government Medical College and Hospital, Jammu, where he died today at about 7:45 AM. As soon as the body of the deceased reached his village, his family members, neighbours and other inhabitants held a strong protest at Nardani Chowk with dead body keeping on the road.
People raised slogans against the JMC, alleging that the Corporation is releasing the stray dogs of the Jammu city in their area due to which it has become difficult for the villagers to move out after sunset. They said in past one month, several people have bitten by these stray dogs. Demanding registration of an FIR against the JMC officials, compensation for the bereaved family and a Government job for one of the members of the family of the deceased, the protesting people blocked the road for over four hours due to which the vehicular traffic was disrupted on the road.
Police officials from police post Chinore and police station Domana also rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the protestors but all in vain. Later, SP Rural, Suram Singh and SDM Jammu North, Satish Sharma also reached the spot and after hectic deliberations with the representatives of the protesting people they succeed to pacify the protestors by assuring them proper investigation in the whole episode and some compensation from Red Cross.
At about 4:30 PM, the protestors dispersed and lifted the blockade after which the traffic was restored on the road. Later, the body was also shifted to mortuary room of GMCH Jammu for postmortem.
When contacted, the SDM said that DC Jammu has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the whole episode which would be done by him and if someone is found guilty, proper action would be taken against him. He said postmortem of the body of the deceased will be done tomorrow in GMCH Jammu by a board of doctors to know the exact reasons of the death.
